You can't go wrong with a Toyota OR a Honda. I believe the Toyota Scion XB is way cheaper since Scion is Toyota's entry level cars.

Well, it's kind of comparing apples to oranges. Honda of course has the higher safety rating, 5 stars all around, however, as from the NCAP, "Safety Concernuring the side impact test, the head of the left rear passenger dummy struck the side upper interior structure, causing a high head acceleration. Head impact events resulting in high accelerations have a higher likelihood of serious head trauma." If you plan on having anyone in the backseat, this could be a concern. The Scion overall is a much more dangerous vehicle, as it received four stars all around, except for three stars in the front seat side-impact. The Honda has side-impact airbags whereas the Scion does not. From a safety standpoint, I would go with the Honda. The Element gets 22/27 gas mileage and the Scion gets 30/34 assuming you go with an automatic. If gas mileage is all that matters, go with the Toyota. If you are looking to have this car for long enough to pay it off, go with the Honda.

The Honda Element is now available in a trim line called the SC. This is a 2WD, more customizable, and flashier looking than the regular Element. If you don't need four wheel drive, look into it. It will be arriving in showrooms within about two weeks.
