It kicks in at higher rpm's. VTEC is a variable timing system that optimizes engine timing to squeeze out maximum hp.When you hit higher rpms, say 4,000 and up, the engine will advance the timing up to the point where the engine "knocks"So the higher the octane gas you use, the more the engine can be advanced for max horse power. Up to a point.

The first replier is correct. Contrary to popular belief, VTEC doesn't "kick in". It is a mechanism that is constantly engaged. It consists of 3 different sized lobes on your camshaft that get you the best results when appropriate. The higher the lobe, the higher the lift, meaning more power. For example when you floor your vehicle, the lift will increase because VTEC causes your camshaft to switch to the highest lobe.

So much misinformation... I feel for you!Read it for yourself before you let a bunch of "think they knows" steer you wrong:http://asia.vtec.net/spfeature/vtecimpl/vtec1.htmlVTEC is not always engaged... far from it. In fact, it sits there doing absolutely nothing unless you put your foot into it and the VTEC computer senses conditions that let it energize or kick in.Simply put: When rpms are about 5500 rpm and oil pressure is high enough, the VTEC solenoid will energize and do several things...1. Reposition the intake diaphragm to use the short runners on the dual runner intake manifold.2. Route oil pressure to the rocker arm pistons to lock in the VTEC rockers to the main rockers such that the VTEC rockers riding on the higher lift cam shaft lobes transmit the extra lift to the intake and exhaust valves. When all this happens, you will feel a noticeable increase in power. It isn't really all that dramatic but the car will respond with much more gusto than a non-VTEC engine. Of course fuel economy will downgrade with the VTEC application as well.Good luck!
