The oxygen sensor/sensors is what your cars computer uses to determine if the right fuel/air mixuture is being used. If you o2 sensor is giving the computer a false reading it may increase or decrease the fuel added to the combustion chamber to correct what it believes is wrong. If the sensor is reading that the fuel/air mixture is too lean the computer will compensate by adding more fuel, however if the sensor is reading that the mixture is rich it will deprive the engine of some fuel to compensate. In theory thinning the mixture when it is not needed can cause predetonation and/or overheating.

The O2 Sensor is in your exhaust system it one and only purpose is to Sense the amount of oxygen in you exhaust from your engine. If it senses to much O2 your car is running to lean and informs the Ecm to richen up the fuel a bit. if it doesn't sense enough o2 your vechile is to rich and it lets the ecm know lean out the mixture a bit . If your O2 is not reading the properly it can cause Poor gas mileage, loss of power, cause the plugs to become gas fouled, etc.
