Ford cars are the best Value. There are enough people infatuated with the Japanese that it keeps prices WAY TOO HIGH on used Japanese cars. For 5000 you can buy a 4 year old Ford Taurus... or a Focus... Depending upon how big a car you need. Either one will be very comfortable, reliable, and fuel efficient. The Japanese cars will cost double that money. to buy Japanese under 5,000 you will be looking at 7-10 year old cars that are about ready for alot of maintenance. For example, all cars on the road eventually need a new starter motor, Water Pump, Air Conditioner Compressor, Timing Belt, etc... And this stuff usually fails between 100-150,000 miles regardless of the make of car. So you are much better off buying a 4 year old Ford/GM or Chrysler than a 7yr old Jap car. The Jap stuff got its reputation for reliability versus American cars way back in the early 80s. Nearly everything was junk back then, but the Jap stuff actually ran a long time. Most of this was due to them nearly all being Cheap Simple economy cars with Manual transmissions. Automatic Transmission repairs are what sends most vehicles to the Junkyard outside of crashes. Think about it...your car is 10 years old...worth about 2 grand and you need a new transmission for 1500 bucks...most of the time the car gets sold for scrap. However, most of the Jap cars were Manuals, and most of the time a Manual transmission will last 2-300,000 miles without need for repair. However in Todays market all of the car companies build cars that will last a long time. If you are considering an Asian car apparently you are comfortable with a small car. The Ford Focus is the absolute best value in a used car today. Inexpensive to buy, good looking, reliable, efficient, and they were on Car and Driver magazines 10 best list for 5 years in a row!
