I just bought a new Honda CR-V EX and i'm considering using better gasoline on it than what i use on my old car, the 83 kind i think. So what's the difference between number 83 and 87 and 93 except the price? And is there any rules that i have to follow about? like someone once told me certain vehicles can only use certain kind of gasoline, is that true? And will it hurt if I put 93 gasoline in when I still ahve some 83 left in the tank? Help will be greatly appreciated!

Typically the octane levels for gasoline is 87, 89, and 92. 92 will leave you with a slightly cleaner engine and less pinging when you finally shut the car off and it starts to cool down since it has less deposits. There really aren't "rules" you need to follow - so yes, if you have some 87 grade left and you switch to 93 it will be fine. Most V-6 engines and up as well as European vehicles and high performance vehicles strongly recommend using 92 octane (especially for the european models since they pump 97 octane in Europe).

If your car does not need expensive gas--don't put expensive gas. The higher the number, the higher the octane. In America, the highest available to the public is 92. The higher the octane, the more control. The gas will not explode prematurely with higher octane.You can determine if you need expensive gas by looking at the compression ratio (e.g. Acura TL compression ratio = 11.0:1). If it is over 10, like the Acura TL, then you should use expensive gas. Why?So the gas does not explode prematurely when the pistons compress. Then you better understand what is happening.If you have a car such as the Acura TL, which recommends expensive gas, you can still use cheaper gas for a short period of time. The engine will adjust to the lower octane fuel. Not only will you get reduced performance with lower octane fuel, but you will damage the engine.

No all grades of gasoline will mix but burning more expensive fuel than the car actually needs is throwing money away. Fuel requirements are in the owners manual and sometimes on the gasoline door. Octane numbers 83, 87 and 93 is the ability of the fuel not to predetonate or ping on heavy acceleration the higher the number the slower the burn time In your engine I doubt higher octain would help your honda. But My 10 to 1 compression 400 horse power corvette LS-2 engined Pontiac GTO only Premium will do!
