check with your local auto parts store, they can help you out in finding an engine and a reliabel michanic. Check with the BBB, and ask for an upfront estimate. On a job this size , he/she should be more than willing to do so, as they WILL make money on the labor.I just had my mechanic replace the engine in my 99 Metro as the cylinders were malfunctioning and i didn't now it...I had engine damage 900 for the engine and "stuff", 600 for labor, 100 for taxes)my brother told me this when i was worried about the 1600 for the engine."you have 2 choices: screwed, or really screwed. you can put money into a car you KNOW is good, or buy another that you probably can't afford and will struggle to make payments on. which do you pick?"I picked "screwed"my mechanic has the car for 2 days, and charged me 600 for labor. you could save that by doing it yourself, but that is risky too, if you do it wrong your car WILL be ruined.make sure you get a warranty ( 6 months or more is standard) and WATCH OUT FOR OVERHEATING! that's the one common trouble after engine replacement and it usually voids your warranty. My mechanic gave me a 30 day labor warranty, so a ran my car all over heck and back, to be sure it was good, before the 30 days were up.you need to gather more info before you make a choice. You may want to just cut your loses and buy a different car, or it may be worth fixing. Only you can make that choice.good luck!
