If the fuel line was simple enough to replace, I would think you would have had no reason not to.... so, let's pretend it is one of those long ones that is fit to conform to every bend on the frame and would take all day to replace if not more!A metal fuel line can be spliced as well as replaced. After all, it is only steel tubing. A section of steel tubing can be removed and metal fittings installed to join a patch section of the same metal tubing. Such repairs are generally not allowed when the fuel line passes through the passenger compartment though because in a wreck a solid piece of steel tubing passes more crash tests than one with fittings in it. If the leak is inside the car, you would have to cut that section out and add fittings to the tubing outside the passenger compartment.There is no patch putty material that will suffice on a fuel line and provide any degree of safety.
