remove the tank?

Remove the Fuel tank. Drain fuel and there probably two straps that hold it.I got this info from Auto-Zone;On your 1991 HONDA ACCORD, the FUEL PUMP is:UNDER VEHICLE, CENTER, BELOW SEATING AREA, MOUNTED IN FUEL TANK.You may be able to access it from the seat, but, I not sure about this. Most I have replaced, I had to remove the fuel tank, but, they were not Hondas.

i have an '89 accord. in mine it has 2 fuel pumps. one thats in the hood and the other that is under the car on the left hand side. you'll need to take your car up on a lift to be able to see it. hope that helps a little.

My '90 Honda Prelude shouldn't differ much in this department from your '91 Accord... Autozone told me I would have to drop the tank but my service manual (www.helminc.com) showed me access panels from inside the trunk area.Under the padding, I found the fuel pump could be accessed from the trunk's left side access panel (the right side would be the sending unit to the fuel gauge). This panel looks easy enough to remove but it turned out the sealant they used was pretty hard after all these years and it took much prying to get it off. Resealing with RTV was not a problem. I would think taking a hair dryer to it before attempting to remove it would help dramatically.The port gains you access to the top of the gas tank and the pump housing sits right there. It is close tolerance and cramped inside the trunk but the job was manageable enough. It took a bit to figure just how to position the new pump to get it in the tank as the pickup tube goes all the way to the bottom.Again, the service manual will give you all the details and no respecting Honda/Acura mechanic would work without it.
