When coasting over 35MPH, I used to hear a clunk-clunk-clunk in sync with the rotation of the wheels that would seem to slow or speed up as to how fast the car was moving. After the speed dropped under 35MPH, the noise went away. If I throw the transmission in neutrul the noise immediately stops at any speed.Now, when the same scenario happens, there is a high pitched griding sound like a very loud zipper on a coat. I mean very loud. Loud enough to make me think that something will break at any moment. Again only happens when over 35MPH and I can make it stop by putting the tranny in N. I would appreciate any comments on what could be wrong.

You need a new car, that's what's wrong!

You could have a cracked driveplate,if thats the case get it repaired now because if it comes adrift it could cause more serious damage.

Unfortunately, your tranny is dying. You are going to have to replace it. You can usually pick up a rebuilt any where between 1000-1500. A used one is much cheaper, 50-300 bucks, out of a junk yard or from a private dealer.The reason your tranny is making that noise is because you have syncro's that are going out. Syncro's are what help the gears be able to switch at different speeds. When they are going out, gears start to grind internally, I wouldn't doubt it that you have some metal down in your fluid pan. It's only a matter of time before you are unable to start using certain gears like reverse & 4th or 5th. The reason it stops making noise when you put it in neutral is because you are no longer using the gears to push you.Depending on how many miles & the condition of your engine over all, it might just be cheaper & better to buy another car.Sorry for the bad news
