Default Car mileage 20 years ago, and today. What's going on here? We are getting ripped off...?

1984, my buddy had a Honda CRX. 4 cylinder, fast and cute. 40 to 50 miles per gallon. 2006, Honda has the Civic, and the Fit. The Honda Fit is the same size as the CRX, probably lighter, more technology in the 4 cylinder engine, yet the gas mileage is 30-40 miles per gallon. 22 years later, and the gas mileage is LESS than the old CRX. How is this possible? Who is screwing the American people? My theory is that the gas companies probably "donate" billions to the car makers and say "make a great car, but let's not mess with the MPG."

TELL THEM WHEN THE CARS GET BETTER MILAGE WE WILL BUY. BY THE WAY MY 98 DODGE RAM 4X4 GETS WITH A 360 GETS 19 MPG. TOOK ME ABOUT 16 HRS ON THE COMPUTER AND 4 SETS OF INJECTORS BUT I GOT IT SO ITS AT PEAK PREFORMANCE. i DROPPED FUEL INJECTOR SIZES FROM STOCK BY 6 SIZES I HAVE 15 LB INSTEAD OF 21.

Looking back at my car logs in Excel, I see that my 1991 Saturn SL2 (1.9L DOHC, 5spd) got an overall average of of 33mpg -- which was around 30mpg in city driving and about 35+ highway. I know the newer cars have more safety features (air bags, etc.), but that doesn't account for the huge loss in mpg nor the massive increases in vehicle weight (1991 was 3300lbs). Every time I see a commercial trying to get people excited about "29mpg!!!" I have to wonder what has happened.
