I suggest a full tune up on it, sounds like either bad gas or just needs a good going thru!!

Go get a tune up. Basically, you need to changes the piston rings (if you say it sputters smoke and doesn't run well). If that doesn't solve it, check for any funny/knock sound when you start the engine...it might be caused by a knock but first change your piston rings and maybe your pistons too. goodluck

A tune up may work, but if the smoke is white, you may have a blown head gasket, which means your water gets into the gas and steams, black smoke, your rings on pistons are worn, probably a lot of miles on it? I had a honda that one of the spark plugs would come lose and run only on 3 cylinders, be careful pulling the wires as to not damage them and get a spark plug socket , take them out to check condition and check for tightness, not tooooo tight, just snug. Also careful of cross threading them, make sure they go in smoothly, try a little oil on threads if it's tight or rusted.

In addition to the other things, I would like to add that a worn timing belt may also be part of the problem. A worn timing belt retards camshaft timing and robs you of wuite a bit of power, especially on takeoff.
