sounds like your speed sensor is going out.There are usually two electronic speed sensors to be found on any given car..there is one on the transmission and one behind the speedometer...neither have anything to do with a cable. I doubt very seriously that it would be the gears slipping in the speedometer, because the needle would move sluggishly in that situation.
