wildly (even at idle).. Bear in mind the Civic has an electronic speedo (no speedo cable).

sounds like your speed sensor is going out.There are usually two electronic speed sensors to be found on any given car..there is one on the transmission and one behind the speedometer...neither have anything to do with a cable. I doubt very seriously that it would be the gears slipping in the speedometer, because the needle would move sluggishly in that situation.

take it to a repair shop (the whole car, not just the speedometer)

You need a new cable, before long the one you have will break and your speedometer won't work at all.

Check the wires going to the speedometer its most likely has a short in the line.

i had the same thing happen in my truck and everyone told me all these really exspensive things i needed to do but come to find out it was just a short in a wire coming from the battery and viola it was fixed

Your speedometer isnt working becuase it's a HONDA! If you get a CHEVY,your speedometer will work fine

You might be getting a bad connection at the gauge cluster. If so, just get a new cluster and swap them out. These import bashers are getting pretty stupid.
