Default CVT Development

I'm a mechanical engineer and a bit skeptical. To me it means parts slipping against one another, which implies wear and eventual failure, maybe soon. I read some negative posts on various sites about reliability, noise, smoothness (jerks), and cost of repair. All of these areas are things that continuous development and refinement should make better.

Today I drove a new 2017 Accord Hybrid with the CVT. It was both quiet and smooth, but of course it was brand new. The sales person, who seemed credible and did not appear to be guessing at answers I might like to hear, said that the transmission, like all components, are continuously developed and refined, and the 2017 version will naturally be better than what was offered in 2013 (Time frame of many of the negative posts) or earlier. He did not quite say the old ones had problems, but he did say the new ones are very good.

So what is the word on the current version? Does this transmission inspire confidence or fear? Should I seek a different car with something easier to accept like one of those twin clutch transmissions?
