Default 2002 Honda Shadow Ace,wont start,instrument lights wont light up,or really dim,could it be

the regulator? battery is showing 12 volts, we jump started bike with my truck,bike started but wanted to die when removing jumper cable. Someone told me the alternators in these bikes hardly ever go out,told me its probably the regulator?

or the battery ... and ive run into problems trying to jump one off a charger - too much voltage .. didnt like it ..
