Maybe it has a bad connection, check it. messing with vehicles 50 yrs

All good answers.

The cap could be damaged (internally) and leaking vapors, even if it is not loose, even there are no visible signs of damage.

It requires a evap testing machine to test this, but its easy and cheap to replace.
