Default 87 honda problem help please!?

I have a 87 Honda accord lx-i, that's been sitting for a couple years now. I just bought a brand new battery, distributer cap&wires, spark plug, fuel pump&filter. Here's the problem, the battery will not stay charged, after I charge it enough to turn over and start the negative cable on the battery gets very hot and the ground wire from the frame to the valve cover smokes. I don't know what else could be do I fix this? Please help.

I thought at first it was the alternater as well but I tested it with a copper wire to see if it was any good...any other ideas?

New alternator? If you haven't replaced that do it.

You need to check the neg cable, sounds like it's not attached to the engine or frame and the small wire to the valve cover is taking al the load. How do you check the alternator with copper wire?
