Instead of putting another engine into this old beater, why not put this money towards a newer, more reliable car.

This old beater would still have an old beater transmission, clutch. pressure plate, differential, electrical system, suspension, brakes, steering, etc. Whats to say these old components aren't also on the verge of failing.

This old beater could easily become a money pit. Let this old car go with some dignity. Bring it to the salvage yard and sell it by the pound. Then buy a newer car that is more reliable.

The HX is somewhat desirable in its own right so you can probably sell it for a bit of swap cash. My favorite civic tuning forum is hondacivicforum.com. They have TONS of info on swaps. Generally though you can get an engine from a Civic SI, Del Sol, Prelude, or Integra. Buying the right year Integra, Del Sol, or SI that isn't drivable for whatever reason can be rewarding because you can also nab the seats and rear disk brakes. The Prelude is good for raw power and torque but you'd also have to get stiffer front springs for the extra weight. I believe you can also swap in an engine from an Acura RSX but its expensive. If you want to get a lot more info all packaged up and neat you could buy a couple books: Civic Pride is one, the other one is something like Honda Engine Swaps
