A poor mans type R is any non-vtec block with a v-tec head on it.

non-vtec engines...

b18a

b18b

b20

slap a v-tec head on one of those engines from a GSR (b18c1) , Type R (b18c5), or an Si (b16) and you got your self a "poor mans type R" or as most people call it an ls/vtec or b20/vtec setup, which is not a good idea unless you know what your doing.

Or if you really want to know.

I've got a very simple setup I consider "poor man's type r"

GSR block

P30 pistons

GSR head

ITR valvetrain

'01 ITR cams

Type R what? Civic, Integra, Accord? The old integra's have a B18. Recent Civics have a K20. If you are after an engine swap on an older Civic then go for the B18 and get the ECU sorted for more power.

On my personal quest for power on my 98 Civic I used a T3 turbo on the stock D16 the car has. Good for well over 200 horses.

A poor man's Type R swap is not a swap at all. It's keeping the f*cking money and getting something useful.
