Default If the spark plugs are not gapped to the right size, would that make a popping noise in my engine?

MANY NEW PLUGS COME PRE GAPED.

I wouldn't think so. A popping sound may be a plug wire shorting out. A good way to locate it is to open the hood at night and start the engine. If it's dark enough you will see the spark where it is grounding out.
