Default how old is too old for tires

My tires still have some tread on them, but I think they're getting pretty old, and they're starting to show some small cracks. The car is parked outside all the time and I'm in so cal. How old is too old when it comes to tires, and what's likely to happen? Will they slowly go flat, or will they explode when I'm out driving? thx!
