Default I have a Honda Accord fitted with 17" alloys plus a Spacesaver spare wheel.?

As I tow a caravan I am not very happy about the Space-saver wheel in case I should have a puncture. The alloys are 17" and taker 225/45 x 17" tyres. I would like to replace the Space-saver with a 15" steel wheel which takes 195 /65 x 15" tyres. I presume that this would be legal as it the same size as the Space-saver, but with a wider tyre. However would I be limited to 50mph, and only to get me to the nearest tyre depot as I understand is the case with the Space-saver?

You would be limited to speed rating of the lowest speed rated tire on the car. But my understanding when towing a caravan is you are speed limited to 45mph anyway.

I don't really see the point to be honest, if you're going to replace the space saver for a wheel/tyre combo you're having to buy and that presumably won't fit in the recess under the boot floor, why not just get another wheel & tyre exactly the same size so there are no problems with actually using the thing without any restrictions?

What you're suggesting would no doubt work, and might be better than the standard solution but it's s bit of a half-way house IMO.
