I don't have a long enough screwdriver and wrench to reach you. So try a nearby mechanic shop.

They got to actually "hear it"

Sounds like a slight bit more of a problem than what I'm having, my shifting isn't affected. But I do have to deal with the whinning noise and it's really annoying! Mine comes from the alternator. It didn't happen until I installed a stereo system and now the alternator has to work overtime to supply enough power to the battery for its regular functions along with the stereo system. May not be the same type of problem, but you could try starting at the alternator to see if anything would be causing the noise. Best of luck to you!

On the way to work this morning my 300D started making a whine I hadn't heard before. It persists whether the driveshaft is loaded or not, even in neutral. I felt all the wheels when I stopped and none feel any warmer than the rest. Doesn't really make that harmonic "rub-rub-rub" noise that I've heard wheel bearings make before. More like a constant tone. Pitching the car left or right doesn't seem to affect it either. I'm leaning toward the driveshaft carrier bearing.
