Default mazdaspeed3 or honda element?

need a car that is good on gas, can get me to the mountains and beach

I'd choose the Mazda.

The cars aren't even comparable! One is a turbo fwd sports car, and the other is an awd or fwd (whichever you get) suv. If your looking for going to the beach and the mountains i would go for the element. The entire rear flooring of the car is plastic and can be washed out with a hose, so great for the beach. The mazdas interior is suede and not a lot of cargo space.
