Default 1997 Honda civic help!?

I have a 97 Honda ex with a d16y8 if it matters my gas gauge on the cluster reads horribly wrong it will go up an down like crazy I never know when am out of gas and it's driving me crazy what could it be?? And is it somthing I can do my self I know my car pretty well just never done anything major please help me any one else having this problem

ell, either the gauge or the sending unit is failing. You might have to take the sending unit out of the tank to test it, but it's possible the gauge could be tested in the dash. I think you'll need someone that knows how to do electrical testing and has the equipment to do so to help you here.

if heater gauge is also going up and won it will be the voltage stabiliser failed ( dashboard) if just fuel gauge very likely to be the gauge in fuel tank needing replacing. we can remove wiring connection form gauge and connect to another ( breakers?) to see if readings stop fluctuating? ( make sure we have a good earth) before draining tank etc.

I don't suspect a loose connection but it's possible I suppose. Have you ever had the dash clocks out? If so start there. Otherwise I reckon the sender, If you are mechanically handy you could get a manual from here http://hondatech.info/downloads/Auto/Manuals/Civic/ and use the troubleshooter flow charts.
