Default Why do i not feel VTEC kik in???

I just got my 99 civic ex 4dr, or some know it as an EJ8. I got her bone stock and for some reason i never feel vtec kik in at its high rpm.. im use to vtec kikin in at around 5000 rpms from my previous Si and well i know i cant compare it but i wouldve thought vtec would kik in around as well. i checked my vtec solenoid and it pops but i have no idea why i cant feal it. any ideas???? thanks
