Default Why is my 1992 Accord Shuddering when I'm idling?

I have a 1992 Accord LX Automatic with 165K miles. Just the other day when I was driving I heard a knock and shortly after the smell of melting wire insulation. I thought maybe I had run something over on the freeway and the smell was from another car since the drive-ability did not change. Now yesterday I was driving and noticed when I accelerate there is a whining noise coming from the engine that seems to climb in pitch as the rpms go up. When I stop at a light, there is a rapid knocking noise and the car shudders and the lights go dim. Once I accelerate the knocking goes away and the whining starts up. The car as of yet has not died. Does anyone know what this can be? Is it expensive to fix, should I just take a loss and junk the car? I'm planning on buying a new one soon anyways so if it's more than $100 bucks to fix I may just get rid of it. Thanks for any input!

It sounds like an alternator bearing is going bad which might also cause more friction with the belt and cause a burning smell. The knocking/whining noise is from the bad bearing and the car shudders/lights go dim at low speeds since the alternator is not putting out the correct voltage which affects the computer controls/electrical system. If possible, disconnect the alternator / serpentine? belt and start the car...it will run for a short time on just the battery power. If the whining/knocking is not there when you rev the engine, I would suspect a bad alt....check the belt for signs of slippage/wear and perhaps have the alt tested at a parts store. A new rebuilt or used alt and belt might be cheap to replace.
