Well, I'd say that 6 months ago was when you should have done something about it. Back then it may just have been low on oil or something, but chances are you've killed it by driving round in it for so long.

And btw, there's a key on your keyboard 3 up from the bottom on the left hand side, press it.

I just love Evelyn's answers', always right to the point and no punches pulled.

What you have not said is what mileage the car has done, in 8 years i would knock up 200,000 miles! The life of a gearbox is very much tied to just how it is used. I have a pal who can wreck the average gear box in under 40k. Being a passenger in his car is an 'interesting' experience - his idea of clutch control is to slip his foot sideways off the pedal the moment it starts to bite. A mile after coming off the slip road and onto the motorway he needs a gentle hint that as he is sitting at a nice legal 70mph (due to the number of points currently on his licence) it would be a good idea to change up out of 3rd gear.Coming up to a round a bout his main braking effort is slamming it down into a low gear. get the idea? Now my wife - and i am maybe a bit embarassed to say this - is one of the smoothest drivers you will ever find. Her gear changes are almost undetectable. Gear box problems are unlikely to come her way. As far as i know the Civic is not known to suffer from gear box problems so you may be pointing the finger of blame in the wrong direction ! Lastly, as Evelyn so rightly says, the minute the box developed a rattle was the time to have it investigated.
