A wrong installation of the fuel pump may cause the engine's poor performance. That's why you lose pwr while driving and the engine starts to stall. This is caused by the inconsistent pumping of the fuel pump.

Here are some steps to fix it:

1. Disconnect the battery and expose the fuel pump.

2. Loosen the retaining ring by placing a screwdriver into the slots on the ring and tapping counter-clockwise with a hammer until it is loose. Once the ring is loose, pull the unit out of the tank.

3. Reinstall the fuel pump and make sure the rubber seal is well placed.

Anything wrong with this may cause the engine poor performance. Fix it as soon as possible because this may break the engine.

If you would like to ask other questions, the link I've provided would be a very useful tool.

The place to start is the fuel pump relay, known as the main relay. It fails far more often in your older Honda than the fuel pump does and leads to many needless fuel pump replacements. The first source has the details and a simple test.

1998 was in the thick of Honda's ignition switch woes, although the symptom of losing power under acceleration is not a good fit for a bad ignition switch. However, your 1998 CR-V is affected by the big ignition switch recall (first recall in the third source) so if it has not been done you can get a free ignition switch replacement. It may fix the problem after all.
