Default Why doesn't the United States have diesel Hondas?

So I was over in Frankfurt recently and got a ride from a friend I have there from an exchange program I had in highschool. He rolls up with this BADASS looking Honda Civic and when I get in I notice the redline is at 4,500rpm, so naturally I ask what the hell is up with that. He tells me it's a diesel so I crap my pants.

If Honda wants to have frugal awesome cars, why not just import the Euro Spec edition? It looks 10 times better than our civic anyway...

And this is what the thing looks like

Its not just Honda. Ford sells a diesel Fiesta in Britain that gets over 65 mpg. As an American, it drives me nuts. These diesels burn cleaner, get better mileage, and cost less to maintain, yet none of the car makers will sell them here. The auto makers "think" we want hybrids and battery cars. NO WE DON'T. We want fuel efficiency, period. We don't care if it runs on Gas(petrol to you brits), Diesel, or donkey piss. Classic example of corporate america "deciding" for us.

BTW here is that fiesta. http://www.businessweek.com/magazine...9060491065.htm

John is quite wrong. The answer is EPA regulations. There are a range of diesel cars we can't have because of some inaccuracies in the regulations. His accusation is misplaced and wrong.

Europe also has a different kind of diesel fuel than what is available here.
It burns cleaner than the 18 wheeler stuff.
Also with gas being so expensive in Europe, the difference between gas & diesel is greater, making diesel more attractive.
(anyone remember when diesel was CHEAPER than gas?)
