Default Honda CR-V not shifting out of first gear?

My mom was in an accident two weeks ago on her way to work in her automatic 2002 Honda CR-V. She swerved off the road to the right to miss a deer and ended up taking out a speed limit sign. Long story short, it did $3,800 worth of damage including destroying the radiator.

Anyway, she said the shop called today and told her they took it for a test drive after finishing the repairs and that the transmission light is staying on and it won't shift out of first gear. They then sent the Honda to another shop to get the tranny looked at. Any idea would could be wrong? Does it sound like it needs a new tranny?
