Do you mean that the shift lever won't move out of park position? If that's the case, do this:> Start the engine, then when you press on the brake pedal listen for a faint 'click' sound from the backside of the steering wheel near the shift lever. (This is the shift interlock release switch operating, which tells the car that you have the brake pedal depressed and it is safe to release the shift lever).

If you don't hear the click sound (it should make it every time the brake pedal is pressed when the car is in park), then the most likely problem is with the brake pedal switch (located down at the brake pedal assembly). Either get a new switch and replace it, or have a technician confirm it is the problem.

If you do hear the click, then you may have a problem with either the shift cable system or the actual transmission itself.

In the short term, to get the car out of park do this:

> On the top cover for the steering column, there should be a small rectangular tab that can be popped out. Once the tab is out, put your foot firmly on the brake pedal and hold it. Then take the ignition key (or any key really) and push it down into the hole and trip the manual release for the shifter. As you are holding the brake pedal and the key down into the release hole, use your free hand and shift the car into Neutral. Keep the brake pedal held and then start the engine. Now you can shift into Drive and be on your way.

Hope this helps.
