Default What does VTEC do for me as a driver?

What exactly does it do for me? Like I know how it works with the camshaft and valves and all that but what does all that lingo mean for me as a driver? And also, how can I tell if I have it in my car, I drive I 2001 Honda Civic EX Coupe. And also, if I do have it, what's the rpm level that it kicks in?

it just helps the engine breathe more freely but opening the valves longer i guess. but i assume you already know that

but........

The main use of VTEC is to provide good high rpm performance(Secondary Lobe [I think a few VTEC engines had three]) while still having an efficient low end power curve and a smooth idle(Intial Lobe)

VTEC is only good for high performance street cars when it comes to modding.

When you are racing(if you are) you don't really need to worry about lower rpms or a smooth idle.

you can check if you have it by opening your hood and looking on the engine block. it will say either SOHC VTEC, or DOHC VTEC, or if you have manual trans rev to over 4500rpm, and you should hear a difference.

VTEC is also used in the some of the Civic engines to help with fuel efficiency, so it's not just for high performance. Honda calls it 'VTEC-E'.

most civics have it. EX, GX, & HX....i own a HX civic myself. it has the VTEC-E engine which is the same as the EX but has 10Hp less. HX=115 EX=125.....also vtec helps alot. gas and power. civics that are nonvtec take alot more time to gain up the speed while vtecs just get there quick! i also own a LX civic that nonvtec that that thing takes forever. it only will go up to 112mph and after that u have to throw it in lower gear which will mess ur engine bearings up BAD! Vtec stand for Variable Timing Electronic Control which is operated by the ecu and kicks in @ 4500 rpms. the civic u have currently, has the D17. most likely the D17a. u can check it by checking the engine block stamp by ur exhaust manifold. also to check for vtec, pop ur hood & look by ur engine head on the left top side. there should be a couple wires running to ur distributor(there should be 2 sensors). its round & grayish color. one is the actual vtec sensor and another is the vtec oil pressure sensor. oil pressure sensor checks the oil pressure and then tells the vtec sensor to kick in when it hits 4500 rpms. if the oil pressure is low or ur ride is low on oil, ur rpm needle will jump back and forth when it hits 4,000 rpm. i had that happen b4 and i figured out that my engine was low on oil...

I have a 2003 acura tl type s with vtech and unless the race is extremely close it doesnt do anothing performance wise. if me vs a 2003 acura tl type s non vtech raced (doesnt exist) id win but BARELY. but it also helps fuel efficiency. for me its 5300rpm
