The first letter is simply the family designation of engines. Parts are interchangeable within the family for the most part. So B16, B17, B18, B20, D15, D16, K20, K24, etc. are interchangeable with others of the same first letter.

The numbers indicate the displacement of the engine in liters. So a B16 is a B series that displaces 1.6L, B18 1.8L, K20 is a K series displacing 2.0L.

None of these designations indicate VTEC. Only VTEC does.

For example, there is a B18A, B18B, B18C. Only the B18C is VTEC.

But the B16A and B16B are both VTEC.

K20A1, K20A2, K20A3, K20Z1. They are all iVTEC, but the Z1, A1 and A2 I believe are all a performance oriented iVTEC, while the A3 is a fuel economy oriented iVTEC.

Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control. D series were double over head cam without Vtec. B series is the most tune engines. K is usually the 2.0 or about engines. The number is the engine size 1.8 B18 K24 is a 2.4 used in the Honda Accord Euro.

1st off they all use the same VTEC system (or i-VTEC (intelligent-VTEC)).

Those are the codes for the engines that Honda vehicles use.

For example the B16A2

B - for engine series

16 - the displacement 1.6L

A - (can't remember off hand)

2 - for the generation
