Default 2000 Honda Civic DX won't start... please help?

Okay I have a Civic DX with 80,000 miles on it. It hasn't really had any previous problems, the only thing I have had to fix was a clogged EGR valve and O2 sensor.

So for about the last few months, at times when starting my car, it would crank and not turn on. I would stop and crank it again and it would start. It's been doing that for a bit. So just the other day as I was driving my car sputtered and kept going, and one minute later my car just died. My Battery light is on but I know it's not that I checked it and it's still pretty new (6 months ago) I was told it's probably not the alternator, but I'm not sure.... anyone have any idea. I checked the distributor and spark plugs.... Could it be a fuel filter? Fuel pump? Any help you can give me I would soooo appreciate!

It could be a bad ignition switch.... start your car (if you can =P) and lightly wiggle the key and see if it turns off. there is a recall for your year for the ignition switch, your dealer can run your vin and tell if your eligible for the recall, in which case you would get a new free ignition switch installed.

you might have a intermittently failing fuel main relay. this provides power the fuel pump and other electrical devices on the car. typically they fail when it is very hot out, and it is much more common in Accord's not so much in civic's but i have seen them. it is located on the right side of the dash if you open the glove box and look in and to the right there is a brown/gray plastic box if its bad sometimes if you tap on it while cranking it will start working again and the car will start. but make sure you can repeat it you dont want to jump to conclusions. also this can be tested with a dvom and an electrical manual.

another other common cause of stalling and no starts in a 2000 civic could be the "igniter"/ icm / ignition control module, and or ignition coil inside of the distributor. these are pricey and require and volt ohm meter to determine if they are faulty, and since it sounds like you have an intermittent problem this would be more difficult to tell for sure.

what i would do is check for spark when you can get the problem to happen consistently... remove 1 spark plug wire, stick a spark plug in it (preferably a spark tester) and make sure the "nut" part of the spark plug is touching the metal of the valve cover or a good ground. while doing this next step dont touch or hold the plug or wire (caution 20,000 volts!!!!). have your friend crank the engine while you watch the gap to see of there is a good strong spark. if you have spark and the engine wont start then you have a fuel problem and likely the main relay or ignition switch is bad. If you have no spark then you most likely have a bad ignition control module or a bad ignition coil. be careful.... it wont kill you but it wont feel very good if you get shocked.

b4 ur car died did your speedometer go crazy? what happened after your car died, did it start right back up when u try to start it or did u hear a clicking sound? does it start right up every morning when its your first time? or did it wouldn't start when u stop somewhere and then get back on the car and it wont start? and who told u its probably not the alternator?

if u heard a clicking sound when u tried to restart ur car after it had died

when you stop by somewhere and get back on the car to restart your car and it failed

if speedometer or anything electrical in your car like radio are acting weird

its likely your alternator or the cable from your alternator to battery is bad

when the battery light is on it doesnt mean your battery is the cause

the actual cause is towards the alternator to the cable to the battery
