Default I have a 1991 Honda Civic Si Hatchback with 155K mi. Smokes a little. How do I make it faster?

The body is good. Sunroof works OK. I'm handy with tools. I'd like it to be a bit faster.

It is my low-budget project car and I have a daily driver.

What engine should I put in it? Another 1.6? Later model Civic engine with V-TEC?

Can I squeeze a larger Accord engine in there? If so. do I use my transmission and drive axles?

At 2250 lbs, it's still pretty zippy.

I don't need to win races, but I like to leave new cars behind at stoplights.

I don't want to break the bank or sacrifice mileage or dependability.

based on all you've said, leave it alone,it wasn't designed to be a drag racer from the git go,or buy something fast and not economical

I think you're pushing the car, & any more will kill it. Smoking a little is using engine oil, so that right there limits what can be done - You're leaking oil into the combustion chamber somewhere, & more power will just increase the problem. Talking about an engine swap in a front wheel drive car & low-budget don't mix.

get yourself a b18 Acura motor which will bolt in and make your civic a quick little street machine. Motor swaps are pretty simple in honda's but if the body of the car is crap dont spend the money and put something nice under the hood. If you are looking to do something really inexpensive go with a turbo kit.

like buddy said above, your burning oil or coolant..what colour is the smoke?

more hp with that problem will only cause more problems but if you want to create more power try

and find a hondata chip for that motor. it will tune the computer for you to safely get good power.
