Default Paddle shifters on the CR-Z?

On the Honda CR-Z, if you get it with CVT then it also comes with paddle shifters. From what I know, CVT has no gears, unlike other transmissions. So, what do the paddle shifters do if there's nothing to shift?

gear ratios, their are seven different settings when you push the sports mode button. You just shift gear ratios just like shifting gears in a regular transmission with a paddle shifter. CVT's are only meant for fuel economy otherwise they're pointless. Although I do like that fact about the "shockless" shift.
