Under the sheet metal the CRV and the Element are the same vehicle. They both have on-demand AWD meaning they normally run in 2WD until a wheel starts to slip and it switches to AWD mode. There is no operator control for this...no levers or buttons...it just happens, then goes back to 2WD when traction is regained. This is not particularly useful for off-roading, but is fine for driving in snow. Keep in mind that AWD only helps you go in snow, it doesn't help you stop.

The Element is less conventional than the CRV if you want something out of the ordinary, but the clamshell doors can be annoying over time and it only seats four. For everything you could possibly want to know about the Element, visit the forum at http://www.elementownersclub.com a very active, free site for Element owners.

we have snow tires for the winter on our 4wd crv and its literally unstoppable in the snow. And it gets 26mpg without even trying.
