10w30 will work, but the Honda MTF is formulated better. It gives better shifts and better protection.

Lets put it this way; manual transmission fluid used to be 80 or 90W, sticky like honey, and stinks when it burns. And it maintained the oil thickness from cold to hot. It can be used if it is your only choice(like being 300 miles from the nearest service station) Road repair crews tend to have this heavy oil for holding down dust on the dirt roads.

It is a lubricant, but definitely you are going to blow oil seals due to the increased oil pressure.

So Honda Man Trans fluid may be thinner probably 40W but it is made for transmissions. "So Billy...be ye the laddie to F#$&k up the engine just because you were to cheap to get motor oil instead? Arrrr ! " .

From what I understand; engine overhauls have gone up in price from times gone by.

I think Honda would have put that fluid on the list of recommended fluids. (I mean if you were using it instead of motor oil for the engine)

(if you mean for the transmission then Honda Manual Tranfluid would be just as good-because it says so by the label "Honda Manual Tranfluid")

Then again, there should be more information on the bottle or in the owners manual.
