Default Temperature Guage not working

I have a 98 Accord Lx and the gauge does not work. I put an after market sending unit and still doesnt work. When I start car within 20 sec the guage goes up about 1/3 of the way and stays there and has been doing that since I bought the car and after I out the sending unit in. I purchased an aftermarket temperature guage from advanced auto and cannot find a place to put it as the sending unit is too small for this guage to fit in. Any suggestions?
