Default electric load detector?

im hooking up an aftermarket audio system that is 1200w rms...my question is, can you turn off or bypass the electric load detector on a 1994 honda civic? or do i need to? will this be ok if i just upgrade the alternator/wiring?

Without the detector, the car can't tell the alternator how many amps to output. Why are you thinking of removing it? Don't, the car won't work properly without it.

The ELD only works in conjunction with alternators designed for Honda/Acura; to the best of my knowledge nobody else uses anything like them. The ELD sends a signal voltage to the ECU based on total load through the fuses and the ECU combines that with information about engine speed and a couple factors I forget. Anyway, the ECU then sends a boost signal voltage to the alternator to raise the output so the battery voltage is fairly stable at idle.

Your aftermarket alternator won't support that boost connection, so what you see is what you get at idle. As long as you are aware of that and don't drive yourself crazy chasing idle voltage you will be okay. Of course, don't blast the system at idle for very long or the battery will discharge. Good on you for thinking about the alternator output wire!
