Default what would make my 1987 Honda accord shift hard and the rpm's unsteady?

Its automatic. It drives and as you accelerate it is fine, then when it goes to change gears it jumps a little. It also revs up and down slightly when cruising at a steady speed.

The fact that it's over 20 years old...

Manual or automatic? If it's manual it may be ready for a new clutch.

you may have several problems going on. hard shifting in Automatics means the fluid is too thick so change it but only use Honda's fluid hard shifting in manuals means the clutch fluid is too low check for leaking master or slave cylinders if Honda uses hydraulic clutches RPMs not steady could be from many causes. try a tune up first or a clogged fuel filter or dirty fuel injectors or a bad fuel pump clogged air cleaner or bad gas

I have the same problem in my 1989 Honda Accord, it is also an automatic.

What really sucks is that my ATF cap wont unscrew with all the force I can muster, plus you should know yourself that they put that stupid cap in a very bad spot at the bottom of the engine where it impossible to get ANY leverage on it.
