the chances are that you have water trapped inside the heater case that is inside the car.

When the defroster is run on your car the air conditioning automatically comes on to dehumidify the incoming air. That process causes the moisture in the air to condense on the air conditioning evaporator. Normally, the water that condenses drains out of the heater case through a drain tube and it drops to the ground. (That's why you usually see a puddle of water under cars in the summer time when the car is sitting with the air conditioning running). At this time of year, you usually find that leaves, grass and debris have been pulled in with the outside air and that stuff collects at the bottom of the heater case and clogs the drain tube. What you smell is the decomposition of that stuff as it sits in the water that it is blocking from draining.

the solution is simply to have the drain tube un-blocked. In a shop they do this by blowing compressed air into the drain hose from the underside of the car. It takes about 5 minutes to put the car up on a lift and blow air into the hose to free the drain. Many shops won't charge to do that if you have the car in for something else such as an oil change where they have to put the car on a lift. check with your local shop to see what they want to clear the a/c drain. they'll know what you're asking about.

hope that helps
