Since its a Civic a newer 1.6 civic with vtec would be the easiest to convert. The engine wiring loom better brakes. The vtec was fitted in the Type R and Vti - Vti-R models. These engines put out an impressive 160hp standard for a 1.6

The B16 will be the easiest by far. It's a very very common swap and you should have no problem finding a qualified tuner shop in town to handle the install. [DO NOT go to any mechanic, find a tuner shop!] The B16 engine was actually an option for the 88-91 Civics and CRXs in Japan and Europe.

The B18 will also fit but will be slightly more expensive to find a quality engine.

The H series engines will fit but I don't recommend going this route.

The K series engine also fits but the engine itself will be more expensive.
