Default If a 1990 Honda Civic had a motor from a 1996 Civic in it, would it have an on-board diagnostic

port? I'm thinking about buying this 1990 Honda Civic Hatchback off Craigslist, but I want to make it super fuel efficient. This isn't hard. But, I want to monitor my MPG while I drive so I can make better adjustments and see what works. Unfortunately, all the car scanners I can find only work on vehicles that are 1996 or newer with on-board diagnostic ports. So, I was wondering if there was a 96 motor in the car would it have an on-board diagnostic port and would it be compatible with a car scanner?

Here's a link to the car:

this car stock will have OBD0 which can not be scanned using a scanner tool. a 96 motor uses OBD2 which you will find multiple scanners for. depending on how the motor has been swapped into the car it could have a OBD2 port or not. in most cases a jumper harness is used and to be able to use a newer motor on an older system. the link you provided for the ad didnt specify which scenario was used but I will assume the jumper harness is used. the jumper harness is much cheaper for installation and doesnt require a full new harness throughout the car. Im not sure how you plan to monitor the MPG from the OBD2 port, most scanners do not offer this option and seems if you were going to spend enough to get one you could just buy a newer car with better gas milage or monitor the mileage another way. Good Luck
