Default 1997 Honda Civic starting problems

I just replaced the original radio in my daughters 1997 honda civic. The radio works correctly, however, the first time trying to start the car following replacement, the car trys to start (rotates) but will not catch. It sounds like it is just on the verge of starting but will not. I went and put the original stereo back into the car and still same problem. I checked battery, good voltage. Charged battery. Good voltage. Thought it might be a grounding issue. Checked and cleaned connections at battery. Still same problem. Any ideas?
