Default Tie a twin mattress+box to Honda CRV (15mi) in Texas?

I want to move a twin matrtress + box over a distance of 15miles (mostly in highways). Is it legal to tie it to the top of my Honda CRV (no roof rack)?

I'll drive slow (40mph), but will the mattress survive?

With no roof rack it's unlikely that you'll be able to tie it down properly. All states require drivers to properly secure loads and you can be cited for failure to do so.

40 MPH is much too fast for driving with a poorly secured mattress and box spring. 20 MPH may be too fast, as it will act like a giant wing if air gets up underneath it. It can easily be torn loose and damaged or cause damage to the property of others. TX has a minimum highway speed of 40 to 45 MPH on limited access highways, so don't even think of using the highway. You will destroy the mattress and box spring, possibly damage your CRV, and even cause other property damage.
