Default i have a 2009 Honda civic ex automatic and was wondering what the i-vtec engine does?

also i have another question that does not relate to the i-vtec, i heard a thump from my engine when i started my car, but haven't heard it since this morning, i was just wondering if anyone knew what it could be.... but my main question is what/how the i-vtec engine works in my car

i dont know if v-tec stands for something but i do know that v-tec is a more after market motor from honda i guess you could say. it has more power factory than the regular motors and i havent friven one but from what ive seen they also have higher revs and im not sure and i have never herd of this in the past but ive herd rumors that around 6500 rpms the car takes off like a rocket almost like a turbo

VTEC stands for Variable valve timing and lift electronic control. What it does is change how the valves open and for how long. there are two or three camshaft profiles, and at a high rpm, they lock together and allow the intake valves to be open longer, letting in more fuel. This basically allows the engine to run smoothly at low and high speeds, and improves volumetric efficiency relatively to an engine without VTEC. it squeezes out more power per volume and improves fuel economy.

Ask the dealer to refill your VTEC fluid -it adds a lot of horsepower
