I own a 97 Prelude and the two have similar enignes, I had this happen to me and it ended up being the VSS(vehicle speed sensor). Honda and Napa wanted over a hundred dollars for just the part so I went on eBay and got one for 20 dollars. Installing it is easy, It is located on the top of your transmission which is on the passenger side of your engine. It is held in with 2 bolts just remove the two bolts on the old one then un-clip the wire. Clip in the new one then put bolts back in.

Here is one on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1993-...item4cea6265e7

There is a speed sensor that usually goes bad on the transmission, which is the most likely cause. Sometimes the speedometer itself goes bad. The wiring is usually ok. It does not have a cable like the other person said. Replace the sensor.

hi there!

your speedometer is NOT run with a cable. It is run using an electronic signal from a speed sensor located on the transmission.

That is a very common problem to Honda Civics and Accords!.

I have seen what you are describing many , many times.

The speedometer will not work or be erratic or get stuck!

More than likely the Speedometer has gone bad.

Here is how it works.

The speedometer is run electrically.(i do not mean digital!)

So there is nothing to grease in the Speedometer System as everything is electronic components. That means there is No Cable Running the Speedometer To Break!!

First you need to check for a proper signal from the Speed Sensor. To measure the signal you need to hook and auto meter to the wire and check for AC VOLTAGE. It will be small and goes up and down with the speed of the vehicle. A good square wave on a scope.Do not replace the speed sensor unless you know it is bad or you will waste money!!

If there is no signal then you must replace speed sensor. If not then move on to the Speedometer.

The main Integrated Chip on the speedometers circuit board has probably gone bad. This causes erratic or no operation of the speedometer/odometer.

There is no way to repair the problem. You must get a new or used speedometer ! !

My local pick n pull junkyard will sell me a speedometer for $20.00 for that vehicle in San Jose California.(the dealership wants $280.00 brand new.)

i could repair yours for about $100 out of the vehicle.

i hope that helps. Good Luck!
