under the right side of the instrument panel either above or behind the kick panel you should find a blue "service connector" that has 2 pins. Connect a jumper wire across the two terminals to take out the electronic advance controls.

then connect a timing light as you would for any car. check the timing against the marks on the drive plate. You should be 15 degrees BTDC +/- 2 degrees.

There is a red mark on the drive plate that should be where your pointer indicates when the timing is correct.

the pointer and plate will be down below the distributor and visible from the front of the engine by looking under the upper radiator hose.

the timing should be checked with the car in neutral and the idle at 750 +/- 50 rpm.

hope that helps

let engine warm up to operating temp., connect timing light to cylinder 1 spark plug wire, disconnect the vacuum connections to the distributor and pinch or plug them then the check the timing at the transmission opening, it should be 4 BTDC, if not loosen the bolts on the distributor and turn the distributor clockwise to retard and counter clockwise to advance then connect the vacuum hoses back and check the timing again it should be at around 15 +or- 2 BTDC and you're done

but if you're talking about the timing belt, the camshaft has 2 marks that have to be aligned with the head with the word "UP" up and in the opening in the transmission there is mark that tell you TDC
