  • James Hinchclife heads a Honda sweep of the top six positions in Friday practice

  • Rookie race winner Colton Herta continues to impress; runs second

  • Santino Ferrucci, another Honda rookie, rounds out top three

James Hinchcliffe led a sweep of Honda teams and drivers claiming the top six positions Friday at Barber Motorsports Park, as NTT IndyCar Series practice opened for Sunday's Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama.

The only driver to break into the one-minute, eight-second bracket around the challenging 2.3-mile Barber road course, Hinchcliffe edged series rookie Colton Herta, winner of the most recent race at the Circuit of the Americas, for the top of the time charts.  Just three-tenths of a second covered the top 10 drivers over two practice sessions.

Another impressive Honda-powered rookie, Santino Ferrucci, finished the day third for Dale Coyne Racing, with teammate Sebastien Bourdais fourth.  Andretti Autosport teammates Alexander Rossi and Ryan Hunter-Reay rounded out the top six.

Activities at the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama continue tomorrow with final practice and qualifying.  Sunday's 90-lap race starts at 4 p.m. EDT, with live television coverage on the NBC Sports Network.

James Hinchcliffe (Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda) quickest in opening-day practice: "Everything on the #5 Arrow car has been working well so far. Honda did a great job; they locked out the top six there, which is great. For us, it's always interesting in Practice Two with the 'reds' [softer compound, Firestone alternate tires]. I don't think a lot of people got out of the reds what they were expecting, ourselves included. I don't think we've ever been P1 in a session and been so unhappy with the balance, if I'm totally honest;"
